Making Dance Photos On a Roof In Portland

As a portrait photographer in Portland Oregon, I’ve made images for a lot of people. Kids, families, couples, high school seniors and juniors, and dogs. Recently, one of my favorite types of images to make are creative dance photos. With dance photos, it’s always a collaboration. Since I’m not a dancer I don’t know the techniques that some of these dancers have mastered. They’ve had years of training from studios like Inspire Dance Center and that makes it a great pairing. They have told me that I have great timing, and for them that just means they don’t have to do difficult moves over and over again. That’s great to hear, as I don’t like being a burden.

I was surprised to also hear that dance photography was hard to find in Portland. One of the Dancers I photographer said they tried to Google dance photographers in Portland and not too many if any came up. Just a few in LA. I know there are a lot of photographers in Portland that could do a great job shooting dance images, but if you haven’t done any before, someone looking for dance photographers in Portland won’t find you and will go with someone that has made dance photos before.

Dance can be so dynamic, strong and beautiful all at the same time so finding locations (out of the studio) that work for some shots can be tricky. Luckily I have a few connections in town,

I look forward to working more with these talents over the years and improving my dance photography here in Portland as well.

So this wasn’t all about a dance photoshoot on the roof of a Portland building. I still hope you enjoyed the images and thoughts.

Take care,

Hayes
